During a recent consult, I was asked the following questions by someone caring for an individual with dementia: “Is there a device that will sound an alarm when the individual leaves their bedroom that I can clip to my belt?” “I also want to be able to talk to them, to slow them down before they leave the room; is there a portable intercom system?”
After a search, my answer was “Yes” to both questions with just one device, the Fall Prevention System (FPS) from SafePresence. This device allows for two-way communication between the caregiver and person with dementia; alerts the caregiver to movement with bed, chair or floor pad monitors; and has a receiver that can clip to your belt!
The FPS will allow you to be anywhere in the house and still be able to communicate with your loved one. Depending on which monitoring device you choose, you will be able to hear if they have gotten up from the bed, chair, or if they walked out the door. If the alarm goes off, you will be able to talk with them and possibly have them wait for you or find out what they need and bring it to them. The monitoring system can be set with the microphone always “on” or a call button can be plugged into the unit, so the person you are caring for can be heard only when they want to be heard, allowing for privacy.
We have tried this device at IPAT, and so far it works as advertised; however, this is not out in the real world. Let us know if you have tried it at your home or facility. We would love to hear if and how it works for you!
